The revision of this well-respected text presents a balanced approach of the classical and Bayesian methods and now includes a chapter on simulation (including Markov chain Monte Carlo and the Bootstrap), coverage of residual analysis in linear models, and many examples using real data. Calculus is assumed as a prerequisite, and a familiarity with the concepts and elementary properties of vectors and matrices is a plus.
About the Author
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, DeGroot graduated from Roosevelt University and earned master's and doctor's degrees from the University of Chicago. DeGroot joined Carnegie Mellon in 1957 and became a University Professor, the school's highest faculty position.
He wrote six books, edited four volumes and authored over one hundred papers. Most of his research was on the theory of rational decision-making under uncertainty. His Optimal Statistical Decisions, published in 1970, is still recognized as one of the great books in the field. His courses on statistical decision theory taught at Carnegie-Mellon influenced Edward C. Prescott and Robert Lucas, Jr., influential figures in the development of new classical macroeconomics and real business-cycle theory. DeGroot's undergraduate text, Probability and Statistics, published in 1975, is widely recognized as a classic textbook.
Mark J. Schervish received his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1979 and has been a member of the faculty in the Deapartment of Statistics at Carnegie Mellon University since then. Dr. Schervish has taught mathematics, probability, and statistics to students in a wide variety of fields including computational finance.
Dr. Schervish has published applied, methodological, theoretical, and philosophical research papers as well as textbooks and research monographs. He is noted for his work in the foundations of inference and Bayesian statistics. He has served on editorial boards of top statistical journals and is a fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics.
