About the Author

Gerald L. Thompson was the IBM Professor of Systems and Operations Research in the Tepper School of Business of Carnegie Mellon University. From 1943 to 1946, Thompson served in the Navy as an ensign on the USS Harwood, which was stationed in the Pacific.

Suresh P. Sethi is Eugene McDermott Chair Professor of Operations Management and Director of the Center for Intelligent Supply Networks at The University of Texas at Dallas.
